Committee Day out 2024
The Committee day was organised by our Captain, Alistair Whitehurst, who chose Cavendish Golf Club as this years venue. He’d commented on what a stunning course Cavendish was, but nothing was to prepare us for what we found when we got there. We were welcomed by staff early in the morning who had bacon butties and coffee ready for us upon arrival, it seemed like an all you can eat buffet with the amount of sandwiches that flew out of the kitchen!
9:30 approached and Mr Captain, Al, and Mr Vice, Tom, had set up a 7 hole matchplay competition for the mornings play. Teams had been decided, matches were set, and we were off. Mr Captain, assisted by former Heaton Park greenkeeper, Ewan Jamieson, played Mr Vice in the first game. A tight game which went down to the last hole and finished all square after Tom hit a sensational bunker shot to 2 feet to win the hole, a point would go to Mr Vice as he played against 2 players. The results came in and it was close battle, but Mr Vices team edged it 4-3. Beers were on Mr Captains team!!
Lunch was served by the delightful staff at Cavendish, sandwiches and chips! After a few drinks and some food we were all set to battle the howling wind for the afternoons play. Fourballs had been decided and the group was led out by Mr Captain and Mr Vice once again. The weather was with us for the day as the rain stayed off, but we were competing against some tough greens in howling wind. this didn’t take the shine off the day, the course was beautiful, an Dr Alistair McKenzie design, in fact, the course he designed and used as inspiration for Augusta National, and you could certainly see it in the features of the course.
As play come to the end, some good scores came rolling in. Edoardo Castagna came in with 32 points to take home the trophy, whilst Jim Whitehurst came 2nd and Tom Kemp came 3rd. There were lots of extra prizes handed out by Mr Captain for various achievements like closest to the pins on the par 3’s and closest in to (or 3!) on 18. The prize of the day though must go to Ewan Jamieson, awarded for being the player to hit the clubhouse in 2 on 18!!!
The evening meal was again delicious, and served by the lovely staff at the Club. as the evening came to an end Mr Captain thanked everyone for their attendance and support as well as Cavendish for putting on a brilliant day for us. Most of all we’d like to thank Mr Captain, Al, and his Parents Jim and Jackie for all their hard work organising such a fantastic day for us. No pressure next year, Mr Vice!
