Away Day at Stanley Park
On Sunday 9th June Heaton Park GC members had an away day to Stanley Park in Blackpool. Back at Heaton Park the annual Parklife Concert was taking place and so we saw this as a great opportunity to bring together our members and go elsewhere.
Fifteen members made the trip to Blackpool for our early morning bacon butty and coffee before our first tee time at 9:30am. Organised by Social Secretary, John Hunt, we played a stableford competition with prizes for best front 9, best back 9, overall best score and nearest the pins on the par 3’s. Off we went.
The course itself left much to be desired, lots of work has been going into Stanley Park to improve its condition, but lots more is needed. The greens were tricky, bumpy, bobbly, burnt, and generally need much tlc to get them into good shape. The layout of the course itself was good though, some nice par 3’s, tricky par 4’s and a couple of long par 5’s gave us enough challenge and enjoyment for the day, not to mention a strong wind. We knew we were near the coast!
As the rounds came to an end there was a mixed bag of result, some really good scores, some not so good. Congratulations to the winner on the day which was Jonny Baylis, he shot 39 points and had a birdie, par, birdie finish… well played!
Overall, the day was about our members getting together and continuing to build upon a fun, friendly environment we have. Once the prizes had been distributed we had a few drinks and a good laugh after in a lovely, and very popular, clubhouse. Captain, Al, made a speech thanking Social Secretary for putting on a great day for us and we all echo his words… “cheers and plenty more days like Sunday, John!”
